Death of 3 GNDEC students leaves parents shattered

Dreams of parents of three budding engineers, all natives of Bihar, presently studying in Ludhiana, were shattered after they received news of their death in an accident on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday.

The trio succumbed to their injuries after the motorcycle (Bearing registration No. DL 65 AS 1875), which they riding, collided with a wall after hitting an electric pole near a curve at Sarinh village on the Ludhiana Malerkotla road near here. The deceased were identified as Anshuman, Vipul Pandey and Shankar Yadav, all students of Guru Nanak Engineering College (GNDEC), Ludhiana.

Though exact cause of accident and sequence of events leading to the mishap are yet to be ascertained the circumstantial evidence suggests that the motorcycle which the victims were riding skidded after its driver failed to negotiate a turn on the highway and collided with a wall on the left side. None of the deceased was wearing helmet at the time of the accident.

Confirming that the college authorities had informed parents of the incident, the investigating officer (IO), Dehlon police, Ranjit Singh, said the process for inquest proceeding under Section 174 of the CrPC was initiated.

“Bodies of the deceased will be handed over to the kin after getting a postmortem conducted according the procedure,” said the IO.

No awareness on wearing helmets

Failure of the administration to spread awareness about the use of helmets and exercising safety while riding two-wheelers once against dashed hopes of the three middle-class families of Bihar, whose sons died in a tragic accident at Sarinh village on the Ludhiana-Malerkotla road, near here, last night.

Had Shankar Yadav of Malaria Meet, Tola district, Saharsa (Bihar), Anshuman Kumar Singh (21) and Vipul Pandey (20) of Rajpur district, Kaimoor, worn helmets, they could have survived even the severest collision.

Sanjiv Sharma, an alumnus of the Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College (GNDEC), regretted that the authorities of various professional colleges and law enforcing agencies had been shying away from responsibility of cautioning youths and students in particular against unsafe driving.

“Unfortunately we have failed to make our wards understand the significance of following practices to protect vital parts of our body,” said Sharma while appreciating that many students had started wearing helmets while riding two-wheelers.

Acknowledging the tendency Manpreet Singh, warden at the GNDEC, said the victims could have survived had they worn helmets.

“Though awareness camps and workshops are organised for our hostllers, we have limited control on day scholars, who happen to stay in rented rooms outside the college campus,” he added.
