In order to consolidate cleanliness around the Golden Temple, state-of-the-art 10-foot tall dustbins are being installed at six locations in the Galliara.

Municipal Corporation (MC) Commissioner Sonali Giri said the bins were being installed at six locations to provide enough garbage storage and convenient lifting.

Known as smart deep collection bins, it will turn the entire garbage lifting and dumping procedure into a mechanical affair. These bins are of two types — green-lid bins for biodegradable waste and yellow ones for non-degradable waste.

The bin has more capacity as it is comparatively larger than the old one. The bin is closely fitted with lid having very thick and durable bag. It can store a minimum of 1,800 kg garbage.

The bin has a sensor which sends signals to the garbage lifting truck drivers and the administrator once it is filled 80 per cent to its capacity. After that, smart vehicle comes to the bin within the stipulated time and carries away the waste. The vehicle has special crane for lifting the bag and sliding door on the top to avoid spillage.

Earlier, as a part of the pilot project, two dustbins were installed in the city.
