Ludhiana, July 27
Jai Parkash Jain, alias Teetu Baniya, an activist, along with his aides staged a protest with bottles filled with polluted Buddha Nullah water outside the DC office here on Monday.
They have also written a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana, demanding to take steps for making the Buddha Nullah pollution-free at the earliest.
Jain said they had collected samples of Buddha Nullah’s polluted water to mark their protest as no steps were being taken to make the nullah pollution-free.
“A number of factories still release untreated discharge into the nullah but no action is taken against such units. Its polluted water is causing health problems to people living near the drain which further pollutes the Sutlej,” he said.
“People pay a lot amount as taxes to the government. We don’t know where this amount is being used. Elected representatives have failed to pay any attention towards the polluted nullah,” he said.
Ranjit Singh, another protester, said when they went to collect the samples of the nullah, they saw some carcasses in it. It was difficult to stand near the nullah due to the foul smell, he said.
Suresh Kumar Sharma, Hans Raj Hansa and Harnek Singh Gurre also participated in the protest.
The protesters have demanded that a case under Section 302 of the IPC should be filed against factories which release untreated waste into the nullah so that such persons could be taught a lesson.
