Work on int’l airport begins in Halwara

Finally, the work has begun to set up an international airport at Halwara in Ludhiana.

To give impetus to the much-delayed project, the construction of boundary wall and approach road to the upcoming international airport site was kick-started by Fatehgarh Sahib MP Amar Singh.

While the approach road will be constructed within four months, the work on the 2340-m-long and 10-ft-high boundary wall with 2-ft wiring over it will be undertaken at an estimated cost of Rs 3.01 crore within the next six months.

However, the work on the airport building, comprising three terminals — international, domestic and cargo — was expected to take off next month. Before the construction of the regular terminal, an interim building will come up to begin the airport operations here.

After the coming up of the Halwara airport, the operations at the Sahnewal airport will be shifted here.

After kick-starting the work, Dr Amar Singh said Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had personally intervened in the project and had taken up with the Centre to expedite the work at the Halwara airport.

He said the upcoming airport would drive investment, jobs and development towards the Halwara and Raikot areas.

Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma said the approach road and boundary wall were the first phase of the new airport as these were critical requirements for starting the work on the new terminal building.

Sharma said the work on the project was going on in full swing and the government was fully prepared to start flights as soon as required infrastructure, including approach road, boundary wall and interim terminal building were ready. — TNS
