Amritsar, May 14

A fire broke out at the Government Medical College here today after a blast in an electricity transformer in the building. Patients had a close shave as they were evacuated amid billowing smoke and flames. Though hospital employees used fire extinguishers, the blaze could only be controlled after the fire tenders reached the spot.

Power Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO meets a rescued patient on Saturday.

The three-storey building and medical equipment inside it was destroyed. However, college authorities did not report any loss of life or injuries to any patients or staff. Power Minister Harbhajan Singh said a thorough investigation would be conducted. He said a ‘compact substation’ would be set at GMC for its power needs.
