Now, you need not even call up the police to complain or give information on drug smuggling or its consumption in Punjab. Two girls, studying in Class XII in Chandigarh have designed a mobile phone application named ‘Drug Stopper’ through which a user can geo-tag the incidence of drugs anonymously for the police to take action.

The Punjab Police and the Chandigarh Police have endorsed the application, after having tested it. It is available on Android phones.

Sanskriti Sinha and Anushka Tayal said they were motivated to come up with the application after learning about the archaic system of sending information to the police.

“The police have provided complaint boxes as well as helpline no. 100 to receive complaints. However, in the modern world the prevailing system seems ancient,” they said.

The girls developed the design of the application, which a team of software engineers of Net Solutions developed. The girls gave a presentation to senior police officials, who approved its use.

“If any user sees drug smuggling, its consumption or any addict, he can safely and anonymously geo-tag the spot. Further, after many such geo-tags, the police can easily map the prevailing crime,” they said.

“The application is connected to the email addresses of the nodal officers for drugs control and the helpline number 181,” said Ashwani Kapoor, AIG, Community Policing.
