The body of Sepoy Jagsir Singh of 19 Punjab Regiment, who had attained martyrdom during an exchange of fire with Pakistani forces in Nowshera sector of Jammu and Kashmir yesterday morning, was airlifted here today in an Army helicopter. The body will be taken to his native village, Lohgarh Thakran Wala, for cremation tomorrow and has been kept in an Army installation here.

Deputy Commissioner Ramvir, along with SSP Bhupinder Singh, SDM Harjit Singh and other officials, visited the village to express condolences with the bereaved family. The DC said a proposal to provide job to the martyr’s wife would be sent to the state government.

Jagsir’s brother Jasbir Singh, who works in Dubai as a driver, has reached home. His sister, who is married and lives in Australia, too is likely to come.

Subedar Swaran Singh, who brought the body here today, said Jasgir kept fighting even after being shot at. “He kept motivating other jawans to keep firing and not bother about him,” said Swaran.

Jagsir had promised his two daughters, aged 7 and 5, that he would come home in a week. The elder one, Nigamjit Kaur, in a state of disbelief, said:“We will not allow papa to go back now when he comes home.”

His father, Amarjit Singh, said he was proud of Jagsir who gave his life for the nation. “I had brought fresh vegetables to make “saag” for him thinking that we will enjoy the new year together,” said Amarjit.
