After floods, homeless cry for relief

Scores of flood-affected families in various villages of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district have been compelled to spend their nights in temporary sheds exposing them to the biting cold of winter.

Pulwama, December 16

Scores of flood-affected families in various villages of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district have been compelled to spend their nights in temporary sheds exposing them to the biting cold of winter.

Residents of worst-affected areas, including Dugpora in Awantipora area, Lalhara, Charsoo and many others, alleged that the government had failed to compensate the affected families who lost their homes.

The authorities concerned, however, denied the allegations maintaining that the compensation was given as per the survey and the list provided by officials concerned.

“We have received complaints that many people have been left out by revenue officials. Those families who were in the list submitted by the officials were compensated,” said Sajad Khan, DC, Pulwama.

“My family is living in a temporary tin shed where dew keeps trickling inside through the holes of the roof,” said Ghulam Mohammad Dar, a resident of Dugpora.

Residents from Lalhara area of Kakapora also alleged that the government had not compensated them due to the apathy of revenue officials who allegedly submitted a flawed list to the Pulwama DC. — OC
