Justice Vijender Jain, chairperson of Haryana Human Rights Commission, today expressed concern over deteriorating gender ratio in Mahendragarh district and exhorted the people to come forward for curbing female foeticide.

He said the commission would soon launch a campaign to educate people about their rights and spread awareness about the adverse affects of gender imbalance. Jain was here to participate in a seminar on ‘Drug abuse, bonded labour, trafficking in women, and declining sex ratio in Haryana’. “It is a matter of shame that Mahendragarh has recorded the lowest gender ratio in the state. The law can award punishments, but cannot change the mindsets. People should come forward to fight the social evil of female foeticide,” he said.

Mahendragarh witnessed the ratio of 753 girls against 1,000 boys during first quarter of the year, while it was 810 last year. It happened a month after Mahendragarh was felicitated with special award by the state government for considerable improvement in the gender ratio in 2015.

As many as 29 health officials, including the Deputy Civil Surgeon (PNDT), were recently put on notice for not making efforts towards improving gender ratio.
