Three months after the Lok Sabha elections, the district administration has started demolishing the wall constructed outside six classrooms of the commerce department in Government Post Graduate Nehru College here.

“The Tribune” had recently highlighted the plight of the students who were forced to study in torchlight of their cellphones during power cuts as the wall obstructed the entry of natural light.

The classrooms were used as a strongroom for keeping electronic voting machines (EVMs) and other poll related material. All windows and ventilators of the rooms were covered by the concrete wall for security, causing a lot of inconvenience to both students and teachers. The authorities had vacated the rooms after the elections but had not pulled down the wall in view of the upcoming Assembly elections.

The work to demolish the wall began yesterday. “A junior engineer along with some labourers came to the college on Saturday noon and began work to bring down the concrete wall outside the classrooms,” a lecture said, adding that the JE informed the college authorities that Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Joon would visit on Monday to inspect the demolition.
