To ensure zero tolerance against ragging, Vice-Chancellor of Bahra University, Waknaghat, Dr Satish Kumar sensitised students through an interactive session on Monday.

He informed the students about anti-ragging laws enacted to prevent ragging in educational institutions. Introduction with freshers should be done with civility as in the name of introduction, millions of students were abused, he said.

Those found involved in ragging would have to face severe consequences like cancellation of admission, a fine of Rs 25,000 and even rustication from the institution for a period ranging between one and four semesters. Besides, legal action could be taken against such students including their arrest. He said they would be expelled from the institution and debarred from admission in any other institution in the future, he said.

Dr Satish Kumar also highlighted the psychological effects of ragging on the young minds and how it led to the loss of self-confidence at times. He added that the university had zero tolerance towards the inhuman act and it was banned both inside and outside the campus

The VC said the university had created a 21-member committee to prevent ragging, which comprised members from the Police Department, media, administration, NGO, students and faculty of the university. The committee meets from time to time to decide upon the course of action for tackling the menace of ragging as well as for devising measures for its prevention.
