Muktsar, March 10

Coming from a poor family of Bhagsar village here, 43-year-old Tarsem Chand has cleared the Punjab Civil Services (PCS) executive exam with top position in the government employees’ category.

Tarsem, a senior assistant in the Finance Department at Punjab Civil Secretariat, Chandigarh, had never dreamt of becoming an officer. His father was a horse cart driver and has four daughters and two sons. Tarsem, being the oldest sibling, had even worked as a daily-wager to share the financial burden of his father.

However, luck smiled on him after years of hard work. He has earlier worked at the District Administrative Complex in Mansa and Muktsar as a junior assistant. He is MA (Punjabi and History), BEd. Besides, he completed LLB from Panjab University through evening classes, after he was sent to Chandigarh on deputation in 2013.

Speaking over the phone from Chandigarh, Tarsem Chand said: “I could not believe when I got the news last evening. I made the first phone call to my parents. I have cleared the exam all because of their hard work. Despite all odds, they always supported us for moving ahead in life. Even my younger brother is now working in Germany after completing BTech.”

Tarsem has two daughters and his wife is presently working as a JBT teacher in Chandigarh.
