Extravagant Praise for Sir Michael O’Dwyer

THAT notoriously anti-Indian journal, the Morning Post of London, has in a recent issue given a certificate to Sir Michael O’Dwyer, the extravagance of which will, we feel sure, make Sir Michael himself blush. The judgement of the paper upon the former Lieutenant-Governor of the Punjab is summed up in one sentence. He, we are told, saved British rule in India. We are anxious not to enter into a controversy with anyone at this stage, as regards the precise meaning, significance and character of the recent deplorable events in the Punjab, but it will probably be as much a news to Sir O’Dwyer himself as it is to most of us that British rule in India was in danger on account of, those events, as he dealt with them he actually saved that rule. We never believed that British rule in India, by which we mean the rule of the King-Emperor in Parliament, is based upon so weak a foundation that disturbances like what took place in certain places in the Punjab, taking them at their very worst, could shake it in any manner or degree.
