Gurugram, March 13

Mewat district is fast becoming the Vegas of Haryana, hosting gamblers from the state and neighbouring states for weekly gambling parties.

In the latest incident, the local police raided one such party and nabbed 11 persons with around Rs 1 lakh. This raiding team was attacked and fired at by over 12 others, who managed to flee.

The incident was reported from Shikarkawa village in Punhana block. According to Pinangwan Station House Officer Rattan Lal, he got a tip-off about this gambling party being hosted in the village and conducted the raid.

Seeing the police, many gamblers pulled out their guns and fired at unsuspecting cops. Many managed to flee while 11 were nabbed. Among the nabbed were Rajasthan residents.

The police, in addition to booking all accused for gambling, booked them for violations under the Arms Act and attacking the police.

“The village is notorious for hosting weekly gambling parties. Every week, residents take turns in hosting these. The host gets a share of the win at the table. If they arrange liquor, they are paid for it. The village and a few other villages are fast emerging as gambling dens. Young boys are being trained to gamble and take care of hosting these parties,” said a police official.

The police had identified key gambling dens and planned to conduct raids in the coming days. An inquiry was on to unearth the nexus, which according to sources, was being run through WhatsApp.
