On the concluding day of the monsoon session of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday, CM Manohar Lal Khattar announced a cut in power tariff from Rs 4.50 per unit to Rs 2.50 per unit for consumption up to 200 units per month. Giving further relief to the poor, he said families consuming 50 units per month would be charged at Rs 2 per unit.

With this, consumers would save Rs 437 per month — a 46.6 per cent reduction in their bills. “The decision will benefit 41.53 lakh domestic consumers. I have fulfilled my promise to bring down power rates,” he said, amid thumping of desks by the treasury benches.

He said in the past four years, his government had taken several welfare initiatives. “We have made Haryana kerosene-free and launched Saksham Yojna to provide 100-hour guaranteed work to the educated unemployed. Apart from ensuring ‘educated’ panchayats, we further strengthened the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), especially zila parishads, via decentralisation. The budget for zila parishads has been enhanced to Rs 10 crore and will be further raised to Rs 25 crore.”

Referring to the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” programme, he said gender ratio, which earlier stood at 837 girls per 1,000 boys, had now reached 914 girls per 1,000 boys.
