Due to the continuing dry spell, drinking water supply schemes based on springs in Chamba and Kangra districts are facing a crisis. Sources said the Jal Shakti Department had been forced to resort to rationing of water. There are about 350 water schemes in Kangra and Chamba districts that are based on springs.

Power cuts being imposed in the state in the morning are adding to the problem. A senior official of the Jal Shakti Department said on condition of anonymity that power cuts were being imposed in many areas of Kangra district, affecting the water supply during the peak morning hours.
In the Dharamsala region, the Ram Nagar and Sham Nagar areas are facing water rationing. Dalhousie, a tourist town in Chamba district, is also facing water rationing. Water is being supplied in Dalhousie once a day instead of two times earlier.
Chief Engineer of the Jal Shakti Department in Dharamsala Suresh Mahajan said there was nearly a reduction of 25 per cent in the water supply from schemes based on springs in Chamba district. In Kangra district, it was 15 to 20 per cent.
Deepak Garg, SE, Jal Shakti Department, Dharamsala, said, “We have started work on connecting spring water schemes with borewell schemes. If the dry spell continues, water will be supplied to spring water schemes from borewell schemes. This may lead to rationing of water, but at least people will get water.”
