The international nagar kirtan that commenced from Nankana Sahib in Pakistan to celebrate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev was given a warm welcome by a large number of devotees here on Wednesday.

Many welcome gates were installed on Abohar-Panniwala and Muktsar-Malout roads. Besides, a large number of saffron-colored flags were installed along the roads. The devotees also organised ‘langars’ (community kitchens) at various places.

Bhupinder Singh, a local resident, said, “It is a historic moment that a nagar kirtan started from Pakistan has reached here. I am lucky to participate in these celebrations. This is my humble request to everyone to follow the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev and try to walk on the path shown by him.”

The nagar kirtan had entered India on August 1.

In late evening, the nagar kirtan reached Badal village where Parkash Singh Badal, Gurdas Singh Badal, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, her children welcomed it. The village was decorated and illuminated. A stall of ‘sharbat’ was also installed outside the Badals' residence.
