The UT Education Department waited for more than two months before starting the lectures for Class XI students who flunked their exams, instead of taking an immediate measure.

Unlike other classes, where failed students were asked to join at the earliest, the flunked lot of Class XI was asked to wait till July. The department usually declares the Class XI results in March and on an average, 10 to 11 students fail in different streams from each government school in the city.

Parents demanded that the department should start extra classes for such students. “Our children had to wait for more than two months before being admitted to schools. The authorities should arrange some special classes for the students. So much free time is not good for students. The department should at least have conducted counseling for children who failed,” said one of the parents.

Another parent said: “Students try to change their respective subjects or schools to avoid embarrassment. The students need proper attention and we cannot bear the expenses of private coaching. These two or three months could have been fruitful for them if they were told about their mistakes.”

Meanwhile, local teachers also favoured conducting special classes for students. “Though there is no point discussing it now, as Class XI classes have already started. There should be a provision for counselling of failed students through special classes. Even if a student wants to change his stream or school, he should be allowed to do the same during this period. Arranging some special classes post results may reduce the cases of failure,” said one of the teachers.

The officials concerned were unavailable for comments.
