Mandip Singh (42), local resident, is battling for life as the amount of heavy metals has been found at ‘life-threatening levels’ in his body.

The police have arrested his estranged wife Renuka Singh for allegedly feeding Mandip food laced with regular doses of lethal chemicals for the last almost two years.

In a police complaint, the victim’s mother Updesh Kaur alleged that Renuka administered slow poison to kill Mandip to grab property.

Mandip was managing a factory here and leading a healthy life till two years ago. But in a cognitive ability test conducted at AIIMS in New Delhi last month, he has been found to have capabilities of a 12-year-old person.

Relying upon the toxicology and medical tests conducted by some of the leading health institutes, the police said the physical and mental capabilities were severely affected due to heavy metals fed to him.

Police sources said it was being probed from where the chemicals were sourced.

DSP Tanya Singh, inquiry officer in the case, told The Tribune that toxicology test report by a Mumbai-based laboratory stated that at least five heavy metals were found in Mandip’s body.

“It is a rare kind of case where a person is fed heavy metals with an aim to kill him slowly. Securing these hazardous chemicals is a very stringent process and these are available only at a few places. A toxicology test of hair sample revealed that the hazardous chemicals were present in the victim’s body for about two years. It is alleged that Renuka in connivance with others including her two relatives had conspired slow poisoning,” she said.

The DSP said it was Mandip’s request for ‘prasad’ that made his family grew suspicious about reasons of sudden fall in his health. Tests confirmed the uncommon presence of chemicals in him.
