Mandi, July 22

Despite the state government appointing two gynaecologists at the regional hospital, Kullu MLA Sunder Singh Thakur, who has been sitting on a dharna for the past three days here, refused to end the stir. He said he would continue the agitation till the doctors join the hospital.

Residents had been demanding that the posts be filled at the earliest.

They said for the past 10 months, the hospital had been without gynaecologists. Pregnant women had to go to far-off places and pay hefty fee at private hospitals.

On Saturday, the government had issued orders to appoint two gynaecologists at the regional hospital in Kullu and they are expected to join within a week.

The MLA said: “Earlier too, the state government had issued orders to appoint gynaecologists in the Kullu hospital, but nothing of the sort ever happened.

The people are suffering as the hospital caters to four districts — Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, a few parts of Chamba and Mandi.”

He said the government should clarify its stand on its previous orders and explain why the doctors did not join the hospital. “Did it take any steps to end the inconvenience faced by the people,” the MLA asked.

Meanwhile, locals are happy with the government’s decision to appoint the doctors as pregnant women had to face a great difficulty while shuttling hospitals.
