Two militants of Hizbul Mujahideen were killed in an overnight gunfight in south Kashmir’s Tral sub-district, police said.

The gunfight raged on Monday evening when joint teams of forces were carrying a cordon and search operation at Reshi Mohalla area of Tral after an input about militant presence.

“As the searches were going on, the search party was fired upon by the terrorists. The fire was retaliated leading to a gunfight. In the ensuing encounter, two terrorists were killed and the bodies were recovered from the site of encounter,” a police spokesman in Srinagar said.

Arms and ammunition, including rifles, were recovered from the site of the encounter.

A civilian identified as Farooq Ahmad Malik was also injured near the encounter site who was shifted to a hospital for treatment.

The two slain militants were identified as Adfar Fayaz Parray of Gulshanpora Tral and Irfan Ahmad Rather of Shariefabad Tral and were associated with Hizbul Mujahideen.

“They were involved in conspiring and executing several terrorist attacks and were wanted by the law for their complicity in a series of terror crimes including attack on security establishments and civilian atrocities. Several terror crime cases were registered against them for their terrorist activities,” the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, the situation in the area was reported tense while the high-speed mobile internet services remained snapped in the area as a security measure.
