Srinagar, December 9

The government today ordered winter vacation for all government educational institutions and recognised private schools up to higher secondary level functioning in the Kashmir division and winter zone areas of Jammu division from December 10 to February 22, 2020.

The order was issued in view of foggy conditions and forecast of further dip in temperature along with rain and snowfall over the next week.

Schools remained shut after August 5 in the Valley, but a few did open in the past few weeks to resume classes for the students of lower classes. They were asked to attend school in casual clothes.

“Students have been demanding the break, as the weather has become very cold,” the official said.

Every year, schools in the Valley break for winter vacations from December 15 to March 1. But this year, after the tension, while offices and other departments resumed normal work, students have stayed away from schools mostly after August 5. The government resumed schools officially, but they mostly remained empty. This year, while the winter break is being announced, a majority of students will miss seven straight months of their class work.

“We will not be attending school for seven months. The winter break is being announced mostly for teachers, as they have been attending their duty. We have suffered a great loss this year,” said Nusaiba Yunis, a student of Class X.
