Amritsar, August 1

The death of a woman, identified as Kamini (20), at a private hospital here led to demonstration by her family members and residents of the Putlighar area here today. Kamini was in the eighth month of her pregnancy.

Her family members and residents alleged that Kamini lost her life due to negligence by doctors. Tony, brother of the deceased, alleged that Kamini was married in Jandiala. He said Kamini had just completed the seven month of her pregnancy and had come to her parents for a checkup after feeling uneasiness.

He alleged that doctors at the private hospital here told family members that Kamini would have to undergo caesarean operation. She died while she was being operated, he added.

Another resident alleged that negligence of doctors led to the untimely death of Kamini. He said if there was any complication she should have been referred to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital as the private hospital here had no expert gynaecologist.

He alleged that a government doctor was called for the operation and the health authorities should look into the matter.

Meanwhile, the police pacified protesters and initiated action under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Amrit Swaroop Dogra, SHO, Cantonment police station, said appropriate action would be taken after ascertaining the cause of death following a post-mortem examination.
