Tightening its noose on encroachers of the government land in Lalru, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) here on Thursday has served notices on land grabbers asking them to evict within stipulated time or face action warranted under the law.

The NHAI has also sought cooperation of the Police Department after discussing the issue of encroachment on the national highway (NH) with officials concerned.

The step was taken to avoid frequent snarls and accidents during peak hours on the NH. Encroachers have been asked to remove unauthorised ‘khokhas’ (tin covered shops) within four days of the receipt of notices or face action.

The notices were served by the NHAI to encroachers in Lalru under Sub Section (2) of the Section 26 of the Control of the National Highways (Land and Traffic) Act, 2002, said officials.

“Those who fail to comply with the directions will be subjected to penalty and forced to evict from the highway land under Sub Section 6 of the Section 26 of the Control of National Highways (Land and Traffic) Act, 2002,” reiterated the NHAI authorities.

Meanwhile, police officials said the NHAI authorities had approached them for removal of encroachments and notices had been served in this regard as the people had not maintained the required distance from the national highway.
